Bidwell Mansion was owned by John and Annie Bidwell, prominent members of society in the 1800s. Born in 1819, John Bidwell was a pioneer who was known for what he added to many areas of society including political, military, and philanthropic contributions. He made the first expedition to California over land and found gold on the Feather River. He was only 22 years old at the time. His wife, the daughter of a high ranking official in the government, was known for her contributions to society to prohibition and also women’s right to vote.
The Bidwells were well known in society. In fact, two of their wedding guests were President Ulysses S. Grant and President Andrew Johnson. At Bidwell Mansion they hosted many guests that had an impact on America at the time. Guests included Susan B. Anthony, President Rutherford B. Hayes, and John Muir.
The Bidwells were also very generous people donating land to educate teachers that became Cal State University Chico as well as donating land for what is now called Bidwell Park.

Horse riders have two trail options, the Loafer Creek Trail or the Freeman Trail, which goes along the stunning Feather River. Bike riders can take the Freeman Trail, check out the Oroville State Wildlife Area with its 11,000 acre, or do some road biking.
Fishing is plentiful at Lake Oroville. In fact, it has a reputation for being the best place to catch Bass in California. So pick up some bait and your tackle box and head out to fish! Maybe you make one of the next record breaking catches. Some current records are 97lb. White Sturgeon, 19lb. 11 oz. Chinook Salmon, and 10lb. 4oz. Coho Salmon.
